Podcast | Vincent Maher on e-sports in SA

In this episode of the TechCentral podcast, Kagiso Media chief innovation officer Vincent Maher talks about the rapidly growing business of competitive videogaming in South Africa.

E-sports, or competitive videogaming, is rapidly emerging as a big business around the world, and South Africa is no exception. Vincent Maher, chief innovation officer at Kagiso Media, is at the coalface of developments in South Africa.

Indeed, Kagiso Media has launched its own e-sports tournament called Mega8.

In this interview with TechCentral editor Duncan McLeod, Maher talks about his career background — working for companies such as the Mail & Guardian, Vodacom and Mxit — before taking listeners into the world of local competitive gaming. He chats about what’s involved, who plays in and watches the tournaments, and the growing prize money on offer to the top players.

It’s a fascinating insight into what is already a multibillion-dollar global industry.
