This article was posted by It’s official. Google has joined Apple by developing its own smartphone. At a media event in California on Tuesday it announced arguably one of the worst kept secrets in the tech world: the Nexus One mobile phone.
The device, built by Taiwan’s HTC, and which runs the new Android 2.1 operating system, is notable for its fast, 1GHz Qualcomm processor and 3,7-inch AMOLED 480×800 touch screen.
The device, which is 11,5mm thick and weighs about 130g, also comes with a 5-megapixel camera and a fast 3G HSPA connection. There’s an 802.11n Wi-Fi aerial, too, and integrated GPS receiver.
The device will retail “unlocked” for US$520, though it will be available cheaper in the US on cellphone company plans. It’s not clear when the product will be available to SA consumers. – Staff reporter, TechCentral
