I'm a die hard Ubuntu user and I preach the Linux gospel to everyone I meet. Ubuntu 9.10 has it's issues but that's true of Linux in general. This fascination with a 6 month release cycle is the biggest threat to Linux. It is impossible to consistently put out a polished and thoroughly tested distro in that time. It also doesn't help that Linux tries to reinvent the wheel with every release. Until that is sorted out and Linux starts to release on a yearly or longer cycle we will always constantly be fighting an uphill battle to have it gain acceptance. People want stability and we don't have that now because of this rush to pump out the latest and greatest every 6 months.

I have upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 with no problems at all, hat to load the newest NVidia proprieatary drivers and that was it. I always have the opinion do you upgrade a Microsoft release or re-install? most people re-install cause either there is no upgrade path or the risk is to great , but on Ubuntu they complain if a challenge or two arises by doing a distribution upgrade?

If it is a business related netbook/laptop/pc the best philosphy allways is to be on a n-1 strategy; hence wait for the first bug fix release or service pack before upgrading.

On the statement of "shouldn’t have gone final until it was ready without the bugs" there is no way Operating systems can test / certify all hardware out in the market - not even M$; so either participate beforehand to get your hardware on the compatibility list or log the "bug" and get it sorted, with Canonical you can be sure they take there customer base and product serious and will listen & fix.

Happy Ubuntu ...

Doesn't matter how good the OS is, if you don't have good office apps or accounting apps its no use to 95% of the market (OpenOffice sucks!)

I'm looking forward to Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic (despite being a Debian user)
Tried out Karmic Alpha 5 some time ago, and it ran pretty well on my system, albeit with the usual alpha glitches.

I'll probably wait a week or two before I give 9.10 a go. It's usually good practice to let brand new versions sit for a month or so after release to allow for updates to fix the bugs and glitches.

By then, I hope I can find a way to disable that brown bit that comes up just after the usplash (the black background with white throbbing Ubuntu logo).... I usually customize my desktop with a lot of blue, and that brown, diarrhoea.inc screen sort of spoils everything for me (even installing the Ubuntu Studio theme and splash doesn't get rid of it, I've been told)

Ubuntu 9.04 was stable and reliable. Unfortunately, 9.10 is the buggiest Ubuntu release I've ever used. From the crash icon that keeps going off, to the splash screen that pops text when it shouldn't, etc...But those are minor concerns. The major concern is that 9.10 has compatability issues with ATI graphics using Intel processors. Many people are reporting on the Buntu forums that the live CD hangs as a result.

I love Ubuntu, but this particular release shouldn't have gone final until it was ready without the bugs. It makes Linux look bad as a result.

I've had Ubuntu running on a desktop for over a year upgrading twice now without any problems at all. I tried a number of distributions before settling on Ubuntu.

The computer is used by my children as a spare when they both HAVE to be online together. They happily switch from the Windows PC to the Ubuntu PC and back. And they're only 5 & 6.

It's great to feel that there is more to a PC than Windows (or Apple).

Do yourself a favor and wait for the Linux Mint remaster of it. It won't disappoint...

Ubuntu is an absolutely great OS. I can personally vouch for it as have been using Ubuntu for more than a year and am totally satisfied with it.

I feel people should also be told about how effective it is to get tasks done.

Unlike Jim Cady my experience with Ubuntu have been quite different. I use it on my PC and Laptop. My webcam works very well with my Acer.

It's a nice step up in some ways, but with webcam driver problems that make it un-installable on several netbooks, and a bug that makes the screen brightness flash up and down, 9.10 may well turn out to be Mr Shuttleworth's Vista, at least as far as netbooks are concerned.

Desktop upgrades are not without problems, either, sad to say.
