Nice article and all the best to AfriHost!

The big question, then, is how will Telkom be forced to give up its monopoly in respect of the local IP connect and the local loop. Fair enough, they might have paid for it in the first place, but those costs have been rewarded countless times over.

Time for government to step in and take communications in SA to the next level, if it has the will for this?

Telkom's dropped the price of their prepaid packages before - bundling line rental and minutes. I don't see a reason why they can't bundle voice and data into cheaper packages in the same way. And while home users might not see the benefit of an unused voice channel (except for, you know, emergency phone calls when the adsl acts up - work-from-home people like me appreciate that), people still rely on fax machines in SA, and that entails having a voice line.

Maybe the most fair would be a true pay-as-you-use structure, with Telkom charging an absolute minimum (like R20/mo), but then increasing phone call fees. Which is fine if you never use the phone. At least that'd be a step in the right direction.

Nevertheless, ADSL prices just tanked, and we have a lot to be thankful for there. I'm also incredibly impressed that IS and Mweb were able to bring SEACOM bandwidth to market in force, in less than 8 months since the launch. I think that's a tremendous achievement, regardless of the rest of the industry.

Telkom needs to step up here and start offering reduced line rentals. Like Gian said, when almost 80% of your monthly bill is just for the connection, before data, there is something wrong.

When the line rental comes down, only THEN big change will come... till then, the normal consumer cant afford the luxury of fast ADSL... :(

Very good article.

I agree completely with Gian and all the points he made.

Lets get onto Telkom's and ICASA's backs so that they sort out the line rentals!
