The 4G/LTE version of Nokia's new flagship Windows Phone device will be offered to SA consumers.

The fourth-generation long-term evolution (4G/LTE) version of Nokia’s new flagship handset, the Lumia 920, will go on sale in SA in November, the Finnish handset manufacturer said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Lumia 920 is Nokia’s new flagship device powered by Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 8 smartphone operating system. The phone will be available at first from Vodacom and MTN, Nokia says.

The company will also launch the lower-cost Lumia 820 in SA before the end of 2012.

Nokia is pinning its future on the Microsoft platform, which has struggled to gain traction against rivals Apple, with the iPhone, and Google, whose Android operating system powers flagship devices such as Samsung’s Galaxy S3 and Note 2, and HTC’s One X.

“The Nokia Lumia 920 includes the latest advances in Nokia PureView imaging innovation, making it possible to capture clear, bright pictures and video indoors and at night,” Nokia says in its statement. “In addition to built-in wireless charging, the Nokia 920 also comes with Nokia City Lens, the latest addition to the Nokia location suite and the start of a new augmented reality experience.”

Both the Lumia 920 and 820 phones will be available in pentaband LTE with pricing, contract details and available colours being announced closer to local launch.  — (c) 2012 NewsCentral Media
