Gremlins fell Absa online banking – again

SA’s largest retail bank is encountering problems with its digital channels for the second time in just over a month. By Craig Wilson.

Absa’s online banking website was available only intermittently on Friday, with some users experiencing slow access and other users unable to access the service at all.

This follows an interruption to Absa services at the end of May which left many customers frustrated and saw the bank extend its clearing times on what was then payday for many people.

Friday’s interruption, coming on the last working day of the month for many, is similarly problematic for Absa clients as it’s a crucial period for making month-end payments.

TechCentral tried repeatedly on Friday to log onto the system, but was met with time-out errors.

Adrian Vermooten, Absa’s deputy managing executive for digital channels, says the problem appears to be “volume related”.

He says the bank experienced “very high volumes” on Friday morning and is aware that the end of the month is a “critical period for customers”.

“We’re trying to get the performance levels and load times back up to satisfactory levels,” he says.

The bank will post hourly updates to its Facebook page and has extended the cut-off time for payment clearance by two hours.

In May’s mishap, the bank did not provide a specific explanation for the problems encountered, saying only that the cause was “technical” in nature.  — (c) 2012 NewsCentral Media

We know that as a prospective advertiser, you are spoilt for choice. Our job is to demonstrate why TechCentral delivers the best return for your advertising spend.

TechCentral is South Africa’s online technology news leader. We don’t say that lightly. We believe we produce the country’s best and most insightful online tech news aimed at industry professionals and those interested in the fast-changing world of technology.

We provide news, reviews and comment, without fear or favour, that is of direct relevance to our fast-expanding audience. Proportionately, we provide the largest local audience of all technology-focused online publishers.

We do not constantly regurgitate press releases to draw in search engine traffic — we believe websites that do so are doing their readers and advertisers a disservice. We’d like the opportunity to demonstrate the value of directing a portion of your advertising budget to TechCentral, whether your company is in the technology field or not.
