Discovery Vitality, the rewards programme owned by Discovery Holdings, has signed a deal with SA’s third mobile operator, Cell C, that will see the two companies launching VitalityMobile, allowing Vitality members to call one another for free if both are using Cell C’s network.

VitalityMobile will cost R29/month and will be available to subscribers to Cell C’s Straight Up 100, 200, 400 and 800 contracts. Customers will also get an additional 50% of data over and above their normal data allocation. This offer applies to integrated voice and data packages as well as data-only packages.

In addition to VitalityMobile, Discovery plans to launch a range of mobile applications for all the big mobile platforms. This will give users fitness, nutrition and health information. The service will be called LivingVitality.

Cell C CEO Alan Knott-Craig says the operator is “excited to be able to create an offering for Discovery Vitality’s extensive, high-value customer base as well as bring innovative new ideas to market”.

Very impressive, this will be the 1st real public group calling offer, I foresee CellC subscriber numbers drastically increasing. Also it’s a great opportunity to get those Vodacom and MTN customers who are on Discovery Vitality. Most will have 2 sim cards and eventually CellC will get more customers through this initiative.

TechCentral is South Africa’s online technology news leader. We don’t say that lightly. We believe we produce the country’s best and most insightful online tech news aimed at industry professionals and those interested in the fast-changing world of technology.

We provide news, reviews and comment, without fear or favour, that is of direct relevance to our fast-expanding audience. Proportionately, we provide the largest local audience of all technology-focused online publishers.

We do not constantly regurgitate press releases to draw in search engine traffic — we believe websites that do so are doing their readers and advertisers a disservice.
