Cell C cuts rates to more countries

The operator extends its 99c/minute tariffs to more international calling destinations.

Cell C is continuing with its price-cutting crusade, reducing the cost of calls to 99c/minute on per-second billing to 27 more countries from Sunday, 1 July.

“Some of these tariffs to additional countries will be on a promotional basis, but are expected to become permanent tariffs by the end of July, once approved by the Independent Communications Authority of SA,” the mobile operators says in a statement.

The price cuts mean Cell C customers can call 34 countries at 99c/minute, the same rate it charges for in-country calls. CEO Alan Knott-Craig tells TechCentral the price cuts have been made possible by dramatic reductions in termination rates in many markets. Termination rates are the fees operators charge to carry calls onto their networks.

Knott-Craig says the company’s strategy is to simplify its tariffs and offer “very affordable rates”.

“In order to achieve that, flat rates on a per-second basis for voice are key and we are tackling all of our price plans across the board…”

The permanent rate cuts include calls made to Angola, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Egypt, Germany, Greece, Italy, Kenya, Malawi, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Portugal, Sweden and Thailand.

See below for a full list of countries where the new rates, both permanent and promotional, apply.

let me dust off my old cell-c sim card. i make a lot of international calls and this will come in handy

  • Karin Fourie

Hi Stuart.  Kindly give me your email address and I will get in touch.

  • Sonono

Have been involved in telecoms for a while and i can say that a bulk of outgoing calls from the republic terminate in the neighbouring countries, and alas none of those countries are in the list of 34 countries.
Waiting or simlar rates to countries like Zimbabwe, Botswana, Swaziland etc.

At this rate, my international calls bill has effectively been reduced by 75%. However, price without quality is a total turnoff. In my experience, the quality of calls from Cell c to Kenya have been poor during peak times.

  • Test

the call quality is kenya is poor especially if you’re calling a mobile phone on safaricom’s network.that may not be cell’s fault but majority of users in kenya are on safaricom.

  • daudi78

Thats what i always thought till i used Vodacom to call Safaricom. The line is clear at all times and it takes seconds for the call to go through. The only downside is they charge an arm and leg to make the call.

  • Sonono

You have to pay for quality. I suspect Cell C is using a VoIP service and we know just how bad the quality can be on that. Wonder what sort of quality one would get from skype.

  • daudi78

Skype quality is fine. They charge about R 3 per minute for cell phones in Kenya.

AKC has actually stated they’re not using VoIP  - http://www.techcentral.co.za/cell-c-may-make-int-call-cut-permanent/32200/

I know this is not the forum, but I am having a difficulty with cancelling my new contract. Is there an email address that send my cancellation letter to as the fax number that I was provided with does not seem to be working? Thanks

Alan Knott Craig is probably my favorite South African business man, Although not totally scandal free , Unlike other CEO’s who only concentrate on bottom line profit and getting rid of bottle necking middle management he has concentrated on his customers and creating competition in what has been so far the most greedy industry our country has seen an industry that has squandered growth in our economy .To you Sir I say well done !

Netspeak is cheaper at 41c to safaricom and highest is 46c to Orange. Although its VOIP like skype its a lot clearer than skype and can put mobile phones to shame on quality. They also give away R20 credit to try it out for all new subscribers. http://www.netspeak.co.za
