Cell C cuts deep on data prices

Alan Knott-Craig

Cell C is launching two new promotional data packages that offer customers Internet access at less than R9/GB of data, the mobile operator said on Wednesday.

It is launching a prepaid product called Giga 200, which offers 50GB of data for use between 6am and midnight and 150GB for use between midnight and 6am when Cell C’s network is under less load. The Giga 200 prepaid Sim-only package will cost R1 799 once-off, with the data valid for a year.

“Our customers have been asking for a prepaid option that will allow them to download large files and perform system and application updates during the night,” said Cell C CEO Alan Knott-Craig in a statement.

At the same time, Cell C is launching a contract-based product called Giga 20, also on a promotional basis, which offers 20GB of data per month. Giga 20 includes a 5GB peak data bundle that can be used from 6am to midnight and a 15GB midnight data bundle for use after midnight and before 6am.

The Giga 20 contract costs R189/month. The inclusive monthly data will be loaded on the first of every month and will be valid for that month.

When using either of the new Giga packages, the data usage will automatically switch between using the peak data bundle and the midnight data bundle at midnight each day. If customers run out of either of the bundles, they will be charged an out-of-bundle rate of 15c/MB.

The Giga promotions are only valid on the Cell C network and roaming does not apply. The promotions start on 8 November and end on 31 January 2013.  — (c) 2012 NewsCentral Media

That’s excellent, especially as my existing prepaid data package with cell c expires today. When and where can we buy this, as I cant find it on the website – I can sea a banner for it, but no info

I can’t find it either, but it only starts on 8 November so they’re probably still busy updating the site.

That’s a touch less data (50 vs 60) during rational hours compared to 8ta’s 60+60.

(although you get more from 12pm to 6am – who uses the web then?)

And the contract rate is far worse. With the 8ta one you get 10GB during normal hours, not 5. It’s not “peak”, it’s usable hours.

CellC does have better coverage though, and I found the signal to be better due to the frequency they used. But these data packages are hardly fantastic, they’re about a year behind 8ta. Basically, only use them if you download a lot when you’re asleep, play games at 2am or can’t get 8ta signal. Or wait for others to react and start competing.
