As Super 5 fails, WowTV talks of launch

South Africans’ last hope for more competition in the country’s pay-TV market, Walking On Water Television (WowTV), is gearing up to launch a satellite TV service within the next couple of months.

TechCentral can reveal that WowTV plans to launch two bouquets of channels, one costing R49/month and the other R99/month. The low prices suggest the company is hoping to appeal to a broad market.

The developments come as rival pay-TV licensee Super 5 Media comes unstuck. Super 5 has retrenched its employees and one of its creditors is expected to bring an application for its liquidation later this week.

Despite suffering several setbacks itself, WowTV co-founder and chief financial officer Luyanda Mangquku says the company is on track to launch services soon.

“We have gone through the long and painful process of finding the most appropriate technology for our platform,” Mangquku says.

Though he will not say exactly when WowTV will launch commercial services, the company has finally revealed details about what it expects to provide to consumers.

Mangquku says WowTV will offer 10 channels on its premium bouquet, which will cost R99/month. A smaller offering, with about five channels, will cost R49/month.

A decoder, with satellite dish and installation, will cost about R1 200.

“We are doing all we can to be up and running as soon as possible,” he says.

The Independent Communications Authority of SA licensed WowTV three years ago, when it also handed licences to Super 5 Media, e.tv sister company e.Sat, and TopTV operator On Digital Media. So far, only On Digital Media has launched a product.

At the time it received its licence WowTV indicated it would launch a service with only one channel.

However, Mangquku says these plans have changed, which is partly why the company did not launch last year as expected.

He says the company had to review its business plan because of general market conditions.

On Digital Media’s TopTV has 55 channels, available in a range of bouquets. It has a basic, 24-channel offering for R99/month and a full bouquet for R249/month.

Mangquku says WowTV has sought funding to bring additional channels to market, a move which led to speculation it was suffering financial difficulties.

“Obviously, launching with more than a single channel meant our initial funding needed revisiting,” he says.

WowTV is still engaged in discussions with several unnamed parties to help provide the extra funding.

According to Mangquku, WowTV is considering off-the-shelf content. However, it is also in the process of sourcing original local content, which he says will set it apart from the other providers.

“Our local content will set the standard for local production companies in terms of defining the type of content that would fly on WowTV,” he says.

Critics have labelled WowTV a niche player with a religious focus. But Mangquku says the company’s offerings will not be strictly religious, but rather “family friendly”.  — Candice Jones, TechCentral

10 Channels for R99.00 per month! Wow! That’s amazing. Is it sustainable? Where can I find a list of these 10 channels?

I stick to DSTV thanx, just to be able to watch live rugger, footie & F1 is worth my R600 odd a month that I pay, not to mention the Discovery, NatGeo chanels etc.

We really need more complition for DSTV, I’m really not happy with the over R500 per month, but as soon as you down scale, you lose all the good channels! This month I’m installing TOPTV to see how they are.

“Family Friendly”? That sounds great. All the best!

Wow ! News get better every day. Hope these guys are on the ball. Sad story for Super5 Media. I a specially feel sorry for retrenched employees. Hope they get paid their retrenchment packages from Super5 Media. Back to Wow, Decoder & installation for R1200? Isn’t that a bit steep for a fresh guy in the market? Let’s wait and see. Let’s watch this space.

Wow R1200 for decor and installation!

WOW TV – bad name! Anyway anything to compete with DSTV where all you get are repeats and old stuff.

Hi Chris I have bad news for you regarding TopTv. I installed it a few months ago and was initially excited at the thought of having a viable alternative to DStv. I have one of the premium packages (R219 pm) and I must tell you I have been VERY disappointed.

Too many inferior programmes, boring ones or channels that are irrelevant to SA viewers (like pompous American presenters droning on ad nauseum about American politics), plenty of repeats, very outdated programmes and most of the so called movies are either ancient or rubbish, unexplained breaks in transmission etc.

I am now convinced the reason Top Tv was able to offer such affordable packages is because they bought inferior TV programmes and had to scrap the bottom of the barrel.
If there is not a drastic improvement VERY SOON, I am trading in my Top Tv decoder and dish for Dstv….they should focus more on trying to RETAIN their customers instead of greedily just trying to sign up as many new suckers as possible!

I do hope that this will be a alternative for DSTV. Actually anything else could be better than where DSTV is now. Bad technical breaks – On Kyk net you hear the News Presenters talk between breaks – Old films and programs being revisited over and over – Quality of films regressed – If I just think where MNET and DSTV were in the early 90′s and where they are now —- DOWNHILL !!
    Seriously thinking of quiting them.

Test the waters but hold on to your hard earned bucks.

It seems the normal progression in pay TV is to repeat a lot at the beginning. Criticisms of TopTV’s repeating of programmes is one that is based on wishful thinking. With 120,000 subscribers, TopTV cannot compete with DStv’s muscle of 2,85million subscribers in SA alone.

However, with the great uptake that the SA market has responded with to TopTV, I think it can only get better. We should expect the same from WOW TV.

TopTV have indicated that they will be adding 5 – 15 new channels in the coming months (i.e. from September or October). This, in my opinion is because they have got a great response from us (I am a subscriber and I love TopTV). As they acummulate more content and secure more lucrative deals as they grow, their programming will certainly improve.

I am on the R99/mth bouquet and will upgrade in 8months after all the repeating. Apparently, the repeat schedule is 3months, then 6 months then 12months. Right now TopOne is my best channel and why I am sticking with it. Shows like Dexter, 4400, the Closer, Numbers, CSI Miami, Kyle XY and I’m sure more to come are worth my R99/month – if others are paying R285 for a similar channel (M-Net).

TopTV is on point – lovin’ it.
